India is known for its traditional comics on Hindu culture, religion and myth, or the home-grown Indian heroes like Nagraj, Doga, Captain Vyom and Fauladi Singh of the mid 1980s and early 1990s. However, in the 21st century, the Indian comics landscape is undergoing significant changes.

India's Comic Book Houses Come Back Fighting

With potential young readers turning to cable TV, the Internet, computer games, and online social media networks, India's small comic book industry has suffered declining sales and a dwindling readership. According to Gulshan Rai, founder of Diamond Comics, the years between 1997-2003 were " 'the dark age of Indian comics' " (Sharma, 2010).

This has affected the survival strategies of companies such as the venerable India Book House (long-time publisher of the traditional Amar Chitra Kathas) and smaller comic book houses like Raj Comics and Diamond Comics. In order to remain economically viable and culturally relevant, the comic book houses are exploring new platforms for their content.
