Lucca is not the most likely location for an international comics and games festival. A medieval city in the heart of Tuscany, Lucca is the birthplace of one of Italy’s most famous musicians, Giacomo Puccini. Enormous stone walls lined with trees surround the historical centre of the city, walls so wide and high that a popular pastime of the local residents is a bicycle ride around the four kilometre perimeter.
Like an elderly and elegant dame, Lucca is a place that breathes history and tradition rather than cutting edge modernity.
But for four days at the beginning of winter, the city is transformed as thousands flock to an international festival dedicated to the art and industry of comics.
