Daphnis and Chloe is a Greek prose work by Longus from the 2nd century C.E. There are a number of English translations, including Paul Turner, in the Penguin Classics series, and Jeffrey Henderson in the Loeb Classical Library.

History and Influence

Nothing is known about the ancient author, Longus, who is not to be confused with Longinus who wrote an aesthetics treatise, On the Sublime. The name Longus as Paul Turner writes in his introduction to his English translation, "If...the author was called Longus this Roman name may indicate he was a native of Italy who wrote in Greek." The story has had differing reputations. Goethe advised, (as quoted in Turner's introduction) "One would do well every year, to be instructed by it again and again, and to receive anew the impression its great beauty."
